Otto Schaefer - Anti-Tank Gunner - My wife's Maternal Great Uncle
To this day, Otto's picture hangs above his sister's bed. Truely a tragic story, Otto was drafted at the age of 17. After boot camp, he was allowed one visit home before being sent to Stalingrad with the doomed 6th Army. After the defeat at Stalingrad in 1943, he was listed as MIA. His family went to great lengths to find out any information about his fate. Several years after the war a man came to their village to report that he knew Otto in prison camp. Otto was last seen working in a rail road yard as a slave laborer in the late 1940s. Since then, no word has been received about him. Oma said that he "receive nothing of life, taken as a boy, never experiencing life."
