'LEST WE FORGET

May no one ever romanticize war, for it is the greatest tragedy of mankind! There is nothing that will make you feel smaller or more inconsequential than standing in silence among thousands of white crosses. Reading the names and observing the ages of the men, always makes me wonder what their lives would have been like? How many children and grandchildren would they have had? How many lives were changed when the news of their death came? Does anyone ever think of them anymore? How much life did they really experience before they were violently taken from this earth? I hope God has a special place for each and every man that fell...

The American Cemetary at Anzio-Nettuno

The British Cemetery at Monte Cassino; note the Benedictine Monastery on mountain top.

Here is the Polish Cemetery at Monte Cassino. The Polish are the ones that actually captured the Monastery, their cemetery is directly behind the abbey. They fought the Germans doggedly offering no quarter. The Polish extracted revenge for the conquering and occupation of Poland.

Here are Mom, Dad, Leutnant von Buch (26th Panzer) and I in the German Cemetery at Monte Cassino - 20,002 German Dead. This place gives mute testimony to the huge sacrifice that was demanded of the German soldier.

This is by far the most moving monument to WWII that I have ever seen. It truly depicts one of the tragedies of war, a son who lost his father. Who will now be the paternal influence of the child? It makes me think of my friend Willi!

This was the memorial at the German paratrooper reunion June of 2001.
The Germans are always fastidious about honoring the dead and placing flowers on the graves of the Gefallen. Treue um Treue!

This is a Fiesler Storch that was shot down in the Murmansk area of Russia. Note the tripod of wood the Russians are using to excavate the downed observation plane from the mud. The below hyperlinked picture is of the pilot, who was recovered from the plane. May God rest his soul.

USE CAUTION!!! BE ADVISED OF GRAPHIC NATURE OF THE NEXT PICTURE! IT IS OF A MUMMYFIED GERMAN PILOT! PARENTAL DISCREATION ADVISED!
