The Fighting 36th

General Fred L. Walker, 36th Divisional Commander. Beloved by his men, he pinned the Legion of Merit on my father in Italy. General Walker tried to prevent the destruction of the 36th Division at the Rapido River. Much to the demise of the 36th, Mark Clark, commander of the 5th Army, forced General Walker to commit the 36th into a "slaughter house" at the Rapido River and then relieved General Walker after the fiasco. The division was no longer combat ready and needed a month to receive replacements and refit.
