Here Kurt is pictured as a machine gunner in Russia. I met Kurt at the Panzer reunion while interviewing Germans about Salerno. He is quite a man and very interesting! He gave me an interview but did not want to speak much about Salerno as he was in action against my father. I saw his paperwork in his Soldbuch. Three of the actions that qualified him for the close combat badge he did at Salerno. He read to me out of his diary: on May 1, 1945, they received word that Hitler had been killed in street fighting against the Russians. He and some German nurses drank a toast that Hitler was dead and the war would soon be over.
I interviewed Wolfgang for my Salerno film. He is a very interesting and kind man that opposed my father at Salerno. He was in a signals unit in the hills as a radio operater.
